Applications for cafés, restaurants, and pubs in central Sarajevo are open until August 12, 2026.

Ekopak and KJKP RAD invite cafés, restaurants, and pubs located in central Sarajevo, particularly those situated in the busiest areas during the Sarajevo Film Festival, to join the Glass Packaging Waste Collection Challenge.

The initiative aims to encourage owners and employees of hospitality businesses to become part of the separate packaging waste collection system through a small daily effort and help ensure that glass packaging is properly separated and directed into the recycling process.

Applications are open until August 12, 2026. Participation is intended for hospitality businesses located in central Sarajevo and in the areas where the main festival events take place.

A Challenge, Not a Competition

This initiative is not a competition, but a shared challenge through which Ekopak and KJKP RAD aim to demonstrate that responsible packaging waste management can become a simple part of everyday business operations.

The three businesses that collect the largest quantities of glass packaging waste will receive practical prizes. The best-performing business will also receive a plaque of appreciation, while the second- and third-ranked businesses will receive certificates in recognition of their responsible contribution.

How Glass Gets a New Life

By joining the challenge, hospitality businesses become part of the separate glass packaging collection system during the Sarajevo Film Festival.

Instead of being mixed with other waste, properly separated glass enters the recycling process: it is sorted by colour, crushed, melted, and used to produce new glass packaging.

Glass is a permanent material that can be recycled repeatedly without losing its quality. The use of recycled glass reduces the need for virgin raw materials, lowers energy consumption, and decreases greenhouse gas emissions. Recycling just one glass bottle can save enough energy to power a computer for approximately 25 minutes.

Every properly separated bottle or jar therefore represents a tangible contribution to a cleaner Sarajevo, more responsible business practices, and the preservation of natural resources. By participating in the challenge, hospitality business owners and employees demonstrate responsibility towards themselves, their community, and the environment.

A Joint Step Towards a More Developed Recycling System

This initiative continues the cooperation between Ekopak and KJKP RAD in advancing the separate collection of packaging waste in Sarajevo.

Through the development of the system, cooperation with public utility companies, support for infrastructure, and educational activities, Ekopak continuously works to ensure that increasing quantities of packaging waste are separated and sent for recycling.

Ekopak and KJKP RAD invite hospitality businesses to apply by August 12 and demonstrate during the festival that the responsible separation of glass packaging is a small step that brings significant benefits to the entire community.
